Reports in France suggest that Shaun Edwards is set to leave his role as defence coach of the French national team with immediate effect.

According to French outlet L'Equipe, Edwards could be replaced by Gérald Bastide, who previously held the position between 2015 and 2017 during Guy Novès' tenure as head coach. Multiple French media outlets have since echoed the reports, with some claiming Edwards has effectively been forced out of the setup.

It would be a surprising move considering the impact Edwards has had on the French side. Since arriving, France have won three Six Nations titles and a Grand Slam.

Although he is contracted until 2028, reports suggest Fabien Galthié is looking at making changes to his coaching staff. France won this year's Six Nations, but they also conceded 50 points against Scotland and 46 against England.

Edwards was notably absent from recent coaching meetings in Narbonne as France began preparations for their summer fixtures against England A, New Zealand, Australia and Japan.

Widely regarded as one of rugby union's greatest defence coaches, Edwards built an outstanding reputation during successful spells with Wasps, Wales and the British & Irish Lions before joining France in 2020.

Should his departure be confirmed, Edwards is expected to attract significant interest from leading clubs and international sides across the rugby world.
